German pay-TV Operator Faces Huge Loss

German Pay television Premiere has cost News Corp European €350 million has announced it will post a multimillion-euro loss this year after it had overstated its subscriber numbers. The latest report has already led to the resignation of Premiere's chief financial officer just a month after its CEO resigned and was replaced by one of News Corp's finance chiefs in Europe.

It is the latest setback in Mr Murdoch's foray into the German media market, where he has already lost billions of dollars a decade ago, while investing in the ailing DF+ satellite pay TV service with Leo Kirch.

Premiere shares have slumped 74% News Corp started building its 25% stake early this year, as the company missed its sales and subscriber targets, blaming hackers who had cracked its subscription wall.

Last Thursday Premiere delivered its latest shock, warning it would post an operating loss of between 40 and 70 million Euro in 2008 after it had to correct its subscriber numbers by 940,000 , erasing terminated contracts and deals it had yet to sign from the total figures of its subscribers lists. Premiere now says, it had 2.4 million direct subscribers at the end of September, compared with the 3.5 million it had reported in June. The profit warning has forced Premiere into talks with its lenders to restructure its debt. The company said previously it would post a net profit for the year.

BMarket watchers said a share slump could also present Mr Murdoch with an opportunity to raise his bet on German pay TV . Mr Murdoch has told reporters in the past, he saw "enormous" growth in the German market. The statement has fuelled speculation he will ultimately seek control of Premiere.
