Russian Launched another German Reconnaissance Satellite

The SAR-Lupe 5 satellite, a 771 kg German reconnaissance satellite , outfitted with cloud-piercing and night-vision radar, was launched Tuesday night aboard a Russian Kosmos 3M rocket from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia . According to OHB-System, the satellite's prime contractor, the rocket successfully released the satellite into an orbit 482 km high about a half-hour later.
The spacecraft carries a large dish antenna connected to a powerful X-band radar system. The synthetic aperture radar signals can see through clouds and observe ground objects around the clock. This is the advantage of these satellites in respect to optical reconnaissance satellites , that are hampered by weather and darkness, significantly reducing their effectiveness in spying on enemy activity. According to OHB-System, imagery produced by the satellite will show objects as small as 1 meter .

There are now five SAR-Lupe satellites in three orbital planes that provide regular global coverage. The launches of these satellites began in December 2006. Subsequent satellites were launched in July 2007, November 2007 and March.
