Turkey : Party suspected of financing two TV's distribution

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) is under investigation for transferring $700,000 and YTL 500,000 to Halk TV, a private Turkish TV channel considered to be the party’s propaganda organ, the Yeni Safak newspaper reported .
The money transferred in the last three-and-a-half years served to pay the channel’s distribution fees on the Digitürk satellite pay TV package as well as for equipment used by the station. The allegations follow another illegal money transfer scandal from the CHP to local TV station Kanaltürk .

Kanaltürk was unable to explain the $3.5 million it recieved from CHP and therefore, the Finance Ministry has sent a letter to the Constitutional Court and the office of the Supreme Court of Appeals chief prosecutor asking them to launch an investigation into the CHP’s accounts.

The top court is still investigating the CHP’s money transfer to Kanaltürk. According to two articles of the Law on Political Parties, such parties are not allowed to run commercial activities. If the Constitutional Court finds the contract and money transfer between the CHP and Kanalt?rk in violation of the Constitution, CHP officials will face up to one year in jail.
